Valeria Ellen Bell Black, 85, of Ringgold left this earth for her heavenly home on October 7th, 2021.
She is survived by her son, Steven Black, her daughter, Delynn Lynch (Clifford), grandson Samuel W. Campbell, and grandchildren C.J., Lacey, and Myrandia Lynch. Additionally she is survived by several nieces, great nephews, and her adopted grandchildren Kim, Jennifer, and Brandon Ledbetter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Ralph W. Black, her parents, Kyle and Clara Smith Bell, and her brothers, James “Sonny”, Kenneth, and David Bell.
Valeria was born on November 9, 1935 at Ider, Alabama on Sand Mountain. Subsequently she lived in East Chattanooga, Lakeview, GA, Graysville, GA and then in Ringgold, GA for 65+ years until her death.
Having 3 brothers, Valeria was tough and yet loving at the same time. Always active, she played basketball in high school (voted most athletic) and later tossed the ball with her grandson Sam in her backyard, well into her 70’s.
As a teen, she modeled for the Chattanooga department store Loveman’s, took her first public job working at a drycleaner, and later worked at the Catoosa County Tag Office. But she found both her best friend, Rebecca Clark Swanson, and her 30+ year career, working at the Catoosa County Water District.
A devoutly religious lady, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, she led the children’s choir, taught Sunday School, sang in the adult choir, and brought to homecomings and church socials, enough food to feed 10 families! Raised in the Primitive Baptist Church, she and Ralph alternated churches after they married. Then when they had their children, she knew they needed the stability of one church and they spent the next 25 or so years at Poplar Springs. Then they transitioned to Fairview Primitive Baptist for the next 25 years. As a Christian, she lived out her faith rather than just talking about it and delivered her faith to others in many ways, often quietly, without attention.
Pallbearers: Samuel Campbell, Cliff Lynch, CJ Lynch, Michael Cawood, Ryan Cawood, and Brandon Ledbetter.
Honorary Pallbearers: Larry Bagley, Tom Black, Dean Cawood, John Eslinger, Kenny Gann, Chip Kerby, and Don Ledbetter.
Delynn and Steven are especially thankful for those who took such good care of Mother during the last 15 months, as they helped make her remaining time happy and safe. Marissa Newman, Rosa Gossett, and Karen Smith.
A most warm thanks to Homestead Hospice, including her great niece Brooklyn Hale, who guided her, and us, to a peaceful end.
