Stanley Robert Smith, 92, husband, father, grandfather, educator, friend to many, lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and one who saw the value of each person he met, died at home in Chattanooga TN on June 9, 2022. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as a cryptographer in the Korean War and was a member of Mizpah Congregation for 45 years.
Stan’s good humor, love of life, quick wit and acceptance of all made him a man among men. Born in Chicago in 1930, he was a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools, then principal of that city’s Von Humboldt Elementary School. Stan came to Chattanooga in 1973 to join his brother at The Sherwood Corporation, then launched a subsequent 17 year teaching career at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His was a life well lived.
Survivors are his wife of 57 years, Helen Reader Smith; daughters Julie Smith-Bartoloni (Guido), Boston, MA and Rachel Beltran (Jonathan), Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren Lorenzo and Tori Bartoloni and Simon Beltran and Woods Beltran. Stan was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Lillian Smith, and brother, Sherwood Smith.
Services honoring the life of Stan Smith will take place Sunday, June 12, 2 PM, at Mizpah Congregation with Rabbi Craig Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at the Mizpah Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will take place at Mizpah Congregation after the burial.
Memorial contributions on behalf of Stan may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Mizpah Congregation.
