Mabel Lorena Catlett, 86, of Rossville, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, March 21, 2020. Mabel was born September 5, 1933 at home in Cumberland County, Tennessee to the late James Russell and Mae Sherrill Hinch. Matriarch, seamstress, music lover, gardener, home chef, Sunday School teacher, gamester, avid reader, fan of all birds and flowers, and with a quip for every occasion, she was a resident of the North Georgia area for over 60 years and was faithfully active in church, more recently Spring Creek Church of God. A nurse since 1954, she worked at Children’s and Memorial Hospitals, but felt a special mission for the elderly, ending her long professional career at NHC Healthcare, Rossville where she retired.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years, James Catlett; but also patients, family members, friends and neighbors too many to count whom she lovingly, sleeplessly shepherded toward their own peaceful, comfortable, honorable deaths.
Survivors include her sons, Steve Catlett and Jimmy (Debbie) Catlett; grandchildren, Rachel (Justin) Ford and Matthew Catlett; and great-granddaughter, Brittie Mae Ford; but also patients, family members, friends and neighbors too many to count who regarded her a surrogate mom or sister because of her unfathomable grace and relentless selflessness. Said Mrs. Catlett’s son Jimmy, “Most people are a mix of many things. Some don’t even know what they are. Mabel Catlett was made of kindness.”
Graveside services will be held 1 PM, Wednesday at Tennessee Georgia Memorial Park with Pastor Bennie Mills officiating. However, even in death, Mrs. Catlett’s passion for nursing would urge all parties to do what is safe for them as they consider whether to attend.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga for their loving care.
