June Atchley Bills of Rossville, Georgia, died on Sunday, September 2, 2018. She was 98.
Born April 21, 1920, Clarissa June Atchley was the second child of James F. Atchley and Kate McGill Atchley of Red Bank, Tennessee. A graduate of City High School in Chattanooga, she worked in her father's law office and at the Tennessee Valley Authority. She married James Clifford Bills on August 31, 1949.
Mrs. Bills began a lengthy career in 1965 as a bookkeeper at Drew's Drugs, a pharmacy in Fort Oglethorpe. She was elected to the board of directors of the Fort Oglethorpe State Bank in 1976 and she continued to serve on the board of that bank and its successor, Capital Bank, until 2012, when she was named director emeritus.
Mrs. Bills was preceded in death by her parents, by her brother Fielding Atchley Sr., and by her husband Clifford. She is survived by two sons, Steve Bills, a financial journalist in New York, and David Bills, an attorney in Atlanta, four grandchildren, and step-children William (“Buddy”) Bills of Chapel Hill, Tennessee, and Janice Liggett of Lewisburg, Tennessee.
Memorial donations in Mrs. Bills' name may be directed to the Ringgold and Fort Oglethorpe churches, to the Martin-Boyd Christian Home, Greater Chattanooga Christian Services or the Herald of Truth in Abilene, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at the Ringgold Church of Christ. Mike Gurganus of the Ringgold Church of Christ and C.G. Griffith of the Fort Oglethorpe Church of Christ will officiate. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, 4pm to 8pm, at the Heritage Funeral Home on Battlefield Parkway.
