John Phillips Davis, 87, of Fort Oglethorpe, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020. Born in Cortland, NY, son of Carl “Chugger” Davis and Brucile P Davis. Attended college at University of Tennessee at Knoxville graduating with a degree in Mechanical engineering. He was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. After graduation he worked at Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga. He retired from Combustion in 1985. He met his wife, “the apple of his eye” Joyce Gilbert in 1954. He and Joyce moved to Fort Oglethorpe, GA in 1959. He began volunteering in the Boy Scouts of American in 1965 and devoted many years of service earning him the Silver Beaver award.
He also served his community as a member of the City of Fort Oglethorpe Appeals Board and was proud to be Santa for the Fort Oglethorpe Fire Department for many years.
He also functioned as past President of the Chattanooga Toastmasters. He and Joyce devoted many years to square dancing locally and nationally. John loved kicking up his heels. He was a past member of the Newnan Springs United Methodist church.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 63 years, Joyce Davis, son, Glenn Davis (Patty) of Fort Oglethorpe, daughter, Denise Dickson of Cohutta, granddaughter, Tifney Aday (Michael) and one great-granddaughter, Brylee, sister Dixie Curtice (Walt), as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services honoring the life of John Davis will take place 1 PM, Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Scott Brown and Pastor Neal Brown officiating.
In lieu of flowers please contribute to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Hospital or Scouts of America.
The family will receive friends 11 – 1 PM, Saturday at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway.
