Tribute

Edwin Carl Barringer, Sr., 89, of Chattanooga died on September 4, 2018.

Eddie was born March 9, 1929 to the late Robert Woodard and Carrie Krause Barringer at the Krause family farm on the banks of the Tennessee River and grew up roaming the Highland Park area of Chattanooga, graduating from Central High School.  He worked at Dupont before joining the Army and serving in Japan during the Korean War.  After he returned he attended the University of Tennessee and received a degree in Electrical Engineering.  He worked for many years at TVA before retiring and continuing his career in consulting at Sverdrup, Georgia Power, Gilbert Commonwealth and Mesa Associates.

Eddie was very active and served in various capacities at St. Paul UMC, Christ UMC, and First-Centenary UMC.  He believed strongly that we are tasked to use the talents God has given us and encouraged all of his children to perform to their fullest ability both in their professional and personal lives as well as side gigs. Eddie and his wife Mary’s love of music, technology, and hard work are legacies which have passed on to the successive generations of their family.

Eddie was seen by some as a quiet man but was known for his dry wit and wicked sense of humor.  His children have thoroughly enjoyed hearing and telling stories of his antics during these last days.

In addition to his parents Eddie was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Smith Barringer and his twin brother, Robert Krause Barringer.

Eddie is survived by his sister, Alice Beck; children, Carl (Missy) Barringer, Steve (Julie) Barringer, Rob (Diane) Barringer, Maria Barringer, and Gin (Dave) Staley; grandchildren Caitlin Barringer, Webb Barringer, Wynn (Kristine) Barringer, Emily (Seth) Cobb, Gretchen Hanna, Alison Hanna, and Gigi Barringer; great granddaughter Mallory Cobb; great grandsons by marriage, Gavin Roch and Gabriel Roch; sister-in-law Jessie Barringer; and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, September 10 in the Sanctuary of First-Centenary UMC with Dr. Linda McDaniel, Dr. David Harr, and Dr. Mark Gooden officiating.  Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Narthex before the service.  Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to First-Centenary UMC Music Ministry, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402 or Kindred Hospice Foundation, 3350 Riverwood Parkway, Suite 1400,
Atlanta, GA  30339.
