Welcome to the memorial page for

Ted Whitfield

September 20, 1929 ~ July 31, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Theodore “Ted” Krouse Whitfield, 87, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, July 31, 2017.  Ted was born in Meridian, Mississippi to the late Maggie Barefield Whitfield and Frank Young Whitfield.  He graduated from Meridian High School and served in the Air National Guard before attending the University of Alabama, where he graduated with a degree in business.  Ted moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1952 to pursue a career in banking.  After 20 years in banking, he transitioned to a sales position with Industrial Tape and Supply Company, where he retired after more than 25 years.

Ted was a man of faith and a devoted husband to Lucia, his wife of 62 years.  Known for his quick wit and playful sense of humor, Ted loved family gatherings at home and the lake.  He was an avid boater and water skier and taught his children, grandchildren and many friends how to ski.  Ted enjoyed working in the yard and gardening, a passion he passed along to his daughter Cyndee, but one that was avoided by his son Thad.

In 2006, Ted and Lucia moved to Signal Mountain, Tennessee to be nearer family, where they were warmly embraced by the Signal Mountain community. Ted loved spending time with all of his grandchildren and eagerly attended many school performances and sporting events.  A great joy late in his life was watching his grandson, Thad, play baseball and basketball.  Never one for idleness, Ted was a frequent walker of his neighborhood streets on the mountain and often stopped to chat with his favorite banker.

He is survived by his wife, Lucia Whitman Whitfield; daughter, Cyndee Lucia of Ashburn, Va.; son, Theodore Krouse Whitfield, Jr. of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; favorite daughter-in-law Carol Bailey Whitfield of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; brother, Charles Herbert Whitfield (Ruth) of Greeneville, Tenn.; sister, Margaret Whitfield Wilks of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law, Lynda Whitman Cockrell of Mobile, AL; brother-in-law, George Price Whitman III of Kennesaw, Ga; grandchildren, Melissa Usry Testa (Matthew); Martha Elizabeth Usry, Sara Ann Clary Usry, Lucille Hancock Whitfield, Charlotte Bailey Whitfield, Mary Louise Whitfield and Theodore Ryburn Whitfield; great grandson Matthew Theodore Testa, and many cherished nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Frank Young Whitfield, Jr. and granddaughter, Caroline Rebecca Usry.

Visitation will be held at Heritage Funeral Home, 3239 Battlefield Parkway, Fort Oglethorpe, GA on Sunday, August 6, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  A graveside service will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Avenue, Chattanooga, Tenn. at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 7, followed by a memorial service at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, 612 James Blvd, Signal Mountain, Tenn. at 2:00 p.m. with Rev.
